Terry & Lesley Clare farm 480 ha at Waituna West (20 km north of Feilding) of predominantly rolling to steep hill country rising to 400m asl.  Their Horoeka romney flock is farmed in conjunction with a commercial flock of 2800 ewes.  The stud flock was established in the 1950’s by Jack Bartlett and was taken over in 1988.

Since then selection emphasis has been on increasing the number of lambs to sale per ewe, increased lamb growth rates and more recently kilograms of lamb weaned per ewe with an increasing focus on hogget lambing. These selection objectives are all aimed at improving the profitability of the commercial flocks of their farmer clients. The selection pressure has increased dramatically since the formation of the Trigg Romney breeding group in 1999.  With access to the top proven rams within the group (and other linked flocks) and the ability to compare their rams with the larger pool of rams within the group, the rate of genetic gain has increased markedly.

“Our aim is to produce efficient ewes that have a high number of lambs with the ability to grow quickly so that our client’s profitability can be maximized while still retaining the soundness and constitution of the Romney.”
